KNIT FOR KIDS FAQ!

Do I have to use the patterns you offer?

No you do not. It is more important for us to receive your sweater than to insist on how it was made. If you have a pattern that is easier for you, please feel free to use it. We hope, however, that you'll utilize one of our suggested patterns so that the sweaters remain consistent. We ask that you avoid using buttons or ties on your sweaters for safety reasons.

Can I create designs inside the sweater?
Yes. Please feel free to create any design or any color pattern you wish. If you have leftover skeins of yarn, please feel free to use them. The more colorful the better. The children seem to respond well to sweaters made of many colors.

Do I have to use wool, or can I use acrylic yarns?
Please use whichever fiber you prefer. Both have advantages and disadvantages.

Is there a particular size that you prefer?
We accept sweaters in children’s sizes 2-10. We generally do not supply infant sizes. However, we do like to receive the larger sizes so that we can supply a broader range of children. Smaller children will be able to grow into their sweaters and older children are not left out.

Is there a certain time of year that you do not collect sweaters?
No, we collect sweaters year-round. You can knit as many as often as you wish, including the summer months.

Do you accept any items other than sweaters?
At this time we are only accepting sweaters.

May I include a note or a toy for a child?
We do not include notes or toys with our sweater shipments. The sweaters are distributed anonymously and generally to large groups of children at once. We refrain from adding any personal information or gifts with the sweaters.

I am having a difficult time with the sweater sleeves. I am not sure how they attach to the sweater.
On our standard pattern, the sleeves are actually just a wider section of the sweater's front or back. They are formed once you have completed rows needed for the body. You increase the number of stitches first on one side (then you work that row) then on the other side at the beginning of the next row. Once you've worked a couple of these new, longer rows the piece will being to form a "T" shape that the sweater resembles.

Can I choose the specific area that I want my sweater to go to?
When we receive the sweaters they are repacked into larger boxes. Sweaters are then shipped to the needed areas and are not marked with regions of shipment. Our international shipping is done largely through our larger partners.

Where do I send sweaters to?
Sweaters are sent to our Carmel location at the following address:  Guideposts Knit for Kids, 39 Seminary Hill Rd., Carmel, NY  10512.

I sent my sweater to a different location other than the Carmel address. Will my sweaters still reach you?
Yes. Any sweater received at any of our Guideposts locations will be accepted and brought to its proper location.

Should I pay to have my sweaters insured?
Insuring the sweaters is not necessary. We do not wish that you incur any additional expense.

Can I send store bought sweaters?
At this time we only accept handmade sweaters. Part of the appeal of the Knit for Kids program is that the children are told that the sweaters are knit specially for them.

Can I reach out to a particular child?
Our shipments are mailed anonymously, due to privacy restrictions. We are unable to supply our knitters with the names and address of the children.

I live in the Carmel/Pawling area. Can I drop my sweaters off rather than pay to mail them?
Absolutely! We welcome any personal deliveries of your sweaters.  Please ask for a Knit for Kids representative so that we may personally meet and thank you.
